The only survivors live in the train Snowpiercer which is driven by a perpetual motion engine created by the millionaire Wilford (Ed Harris) that lives in the engine part. In 2031, after seventeen years, there is a fight of classes inside the train since the oppressed lower class lives in dreadful conditions in the last wagons of the train while the elite lives in the front wagons. The lower class is fed with protein bars only; they are oppressed and punished by Minister Mason (Tilda Swinton) and her brutal guards; and their children are taken every now and then when they reach a certain height. The leaders Gilliam (Sir John Hurt), Curtis Everett (Chris Evans), and Edgar (Jamie Bell) are plotting a scheme to reach the engine and talk to Wilford about their conditions using the addicted security engineer Namgoong Minsoo (Song Kang-ho) and his clairvoyant daughter Yona (Ko Asung) that are imprisoned to open the locked doors. When the son of Tanya (Octavia Spencer), Tim (Marcanthonee Reis), is captured by Mason, they decide to execute their plan. There are many casualties and soon Curtis discovers that they have been manipulated by Wilford to balance the resources in the train, and why the magnate keeps the lower class alive Actor Jamie Bell

I haven"t watched this movie in a while, but I remember my initial reaction being that it was a horrible movie with an incredibly deep narrative. Absolutely hate the movie, but I find it very interesting at the same time. So just like the film but with more filler. I"ll give it a hard pass. I havent watched the first one, but this looks a lot like starship troopers. 4 years for THIS. If the guy could find a way to close the door tho, they might have more left standing. Great analysis man! ill definitely view the film differently on my 2nd viewing. Finding plot holes in Snowpiercer is like finding plot holes in Animal Farm or a Dr. Seuss book. It"s meant to be more allegorical than anything else. Freakin Funny movie.  Trailer makes it look like an action movie with character, but it"s an action movie with humor. If it were about feudalism, you could still move upwards via knighthood (the police force) or as a wealthy merchant. And as for our protagonist, he does INDEED move forward due to his aptitude. Notice that how he was being groomed into leadership by the old guy. It was not his divine right to become the leader, he was CHOSEN by the ruler for his leadership abilities, which was established all the way at the beginning of the movie. To me, the seperation of the classes and the fact that the seperate classes (especially the middle class) being doctrinated into hating the lower class and the attempts at keeping the population low and the ecosystem balanced is a DIRECT reference to neoliberalism. You didn"t see that type of indoctrination until after the industrialization.

What did it mean when W made the hand gesture, like the other elites and the kid in the engine pulling the lever (which is where I assume the hand gesture came from) Did he actually build the train, or was he also a child that was down there cranking the levers a long time ago, and he just took over from someone else? I"ve rewatched this particular video of yours maybe 3 or 4 times now.
I believe that the ending of this film is also extremely symbolic. Instead of ending the movie with Curtis taking over the train and potentially fixing the hierarchy, Bong Joon-ho decides to end the movie with destruction. This could be Joon-Ho"s message. Consider this: the tail end of the train is just as corrupted as the head end. Even Curtis at the end of the movie was considering becoming corrupt once given power. If Curtis were to become the leader, the hierarchy of the train would be continued, except this time the tail end would be the top while the head end would end up suffering for their sins. This is a reoccurring theme. The shoe on the head. Regardless of who ever is on top, hierarchy leads to suffering. It is interesting how a linear style of movie is used to present cyclic concept. The cyclical movement of the train around the world is the same cycle of oppression of those in power and those at the bottom of society. The only way out of this vicious cycle is to destroy the train. And even then that destruction has another layer to it. In the movie the train is compared to the world, and the people of the train to all of humanity. It can then be seen that the only solution to human oppression is the annihilation of the humans. The humans brought upon this global freezing in an attempt to correct the consequence of their global warming. Regardless of the class of capitalism humanity is the culprit for the destruction of the planet, except for the two lone survivors: the children, who were born into the world that was already broken and destroyed. The ending with the polar bear could signify that beyond all the human struggles and human conditions, there exists a world out there with different organisms.
I thought Snowpiercer was highly entertaining. It was not world-changing or a mind-blowing social commentary or anything like that. Let"s get that out of the way first. Yes, it was metaphorical. But the metaphor was SO in your face that it kinda didn"t really have an impact. I mean, if you"ve ever read or watched much scifi before you"ve already encountered this sort of thing. Based on the buzz, I went in expecting a lot of pretentious bull. I found instead a delightfully bizarre action flick with well-realized characters.
There are a lot of conceits you just have to take for granted starting out. Like the whole setup. Or the fact that there are going to be some really surreal bits that are just in there to give it an otherworldly feel. If you need straight-up logic, you PROBABLY shouldn"t be seeing a film called "Snowpiercer" that is about a dystopian future on board a train after the icepocalypse.
BUT. The character arcs! They were good. Pretty much every single character had their entire world view upended. The two born on the train that we see most end up out of the train. The main character gets everything he wants but finds out he doesn"t want it. The man who built the gates destroys the ultimate gate. The man who had the ultimate faith in their leader is abandoned by him (justifiably, but still. Et cetera.
It"s also just a very pretty movie, and there are lots of fun little bits in it that added to the atmosphere.
I am normally not squeamish about violent scenes but these were cringe-inducing. Also, people lose limbs a lot. I think it"s probably appropriate for ages 13.
Quite frankly, I rate on entertainment value, not on disassembling every bit of the movie. So I give this 9 out of 10. Not ten out of ten because 1) there was a rather unfortunately dramatic and pretentious intro bit with some lame conspiracy theory music, and 2) THE POLAR BEAR. Just no to the polar bear.
